SEE MOREMystical creatures have existed in the mythology of nations worldwide, serving as ambassadors of the greatest civilizations on Earth. Greek mythology features unicorns, centaurs, Hydra, and Pegasus. Indian mythology introduces the serpent god Naga and the golden-winged Garuda. In Japan, the nine-headed dragon Kuzuryu and the nine-tailed fox Kitsune captivate the imagination. Meanwhile, Egyptian mythology reveres deities such as Ra, Anubis, Thoth, and Horus, represented as falcons, jackals, and ibises.
“Shan Hai Qi Yi Ji” unveils a world of mystical beings described in the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), one of China’s oldest geographical records dating back to the Warring States period. This ancient text not only chronicles the geography of ancient China but also describes extraordinary mythical beasts imbued with ancient knowledge, reflecting the worldview and philosophy of East Asia’s early civilizations.
“Selection of Strange Tales in Linh Nam,” compiled during the late Tran Dynasty, is Vietnam’s first collection of folklore. It documents legendary tales about the origins of the Vietnamese people, the relationship between humanity and nature, and the enduring virtues of loyalty and love. Stories such as the Dragon and Fairy ancestors, the founding of the Hong Bang Dynasty, Lac Long Quan slaying monsters to save the people, the Hung Kings, and the Four Immortals continue to be passed down through generations today.
The parallels between the Classic of Mountains and Seas and the Selection of Strange Tales in Linh Nam—stories of water dragons, nine-tailed foxes, mermen, tree spirits, and golden turtles—highlight a history of cultural exchange among nations and civilizations.
The exhibition, “Selection of Strange Tales in Linh Nam & Classic of Mountains and Seas – Mystical Creatures of the Orient,” is a grand and unique artistic installation. It paints the mythical universe of the Orient, telling the story of civilizations converging over millennia through the language of light and color. Visitors will walk through a dazzling garden, illuminated by mystical creatures shining brightly in the skies above Ocean City.
The Ocean International Lantern Exhibition 2025 is held in collaboration with the Fosun Group, the organization behind the Yu Garden Lantern Festival, a recognized intangible cultural heritage of China. For over 20 years, this festival in Shanghai has combined traditional and modern artistry, attracting millions of visitors each year.
